  1. A black family would have to literally step over waiting black children to adopt a white or international child.  It would be perceived as self hate.

  2. Why does matter?  There is no difference in the color of skin...

I am an adoptive mother of a child out of my race.  What color I am and what color my child is doesn't matter.

And for the record, people who are trying to adopt might get scared off by the long waiting list for caucasian children, and unfair as it may be, how much more expensive it is to adopt a caucasion baby.

  3. I  am sure it happens just not as much

  4. I've known or known of three white girls who were adopted by Hispanic families, and just before we adopted, we saw a mixed (black & white) couple with a Chinese daughter.  And I've certainly known white foster kids who lived in black families.

  5. lionel richie adopted nicole richie

  6. yeah strange now you say that but most are not well off

  7. Because most of the white kids up for adoption get adopted very quickly by other white parents.  It's the minority children who are in abundance because most white people only want white babies and they usually get them.  So the few whites who do adopt minority babies should be commended.

  8. I love Dory's explanation. Go DORY!!

  9. Well look at the bad press we white folks get! I mean honestly would you want to be legally responsible for raising the next Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, or Nicole Richie? Basically you can pick a kid that is going to be greatful, or a kid that is going to run around with no underwear on playing drunken marco polo 'cooter edition.' Or worse off you'll end up blowing your whole retirement savings on rehab bills. Trust me, if you go this route, all you'll end up with is an efficiency apartment that smells like stale beer, a nagging metamorphasing bedsore, and a soggy couch that you've been unable to get off of for 4 days straight! And i'm not so sure that you haven't seen minorities adopting white kids... what about Michael Jackson?

  10. Because racism is flowing in the undercurrents of adoptions and adoption agencies want to give white babies to white couples first. There was a fabulous article I read years ago about a black couple who tested this theory. They contacted several agencies wanting to adopt a white baby and not one would work with them. Then they decided to stop telling the agency over the phone that they were black. So they discussed adoption over the phone and that they wanted a white baby and then scheduled an appt. When they went to the appt. and it was discovered that they are black the agency made every excuse in the world to back out of the adoption, one agency asked them why on earth would they want a white child and another offered them a black baby at an extremely discounted price. If I can find the article I will post the link.

Another reason is that there is more demand for white babies then supply so agencies will give them to white people first. There are more white adoptive parents then minority adoptive parents.

And last but not least, I would think that minorities have a better understanding regarding issues of race and racism and see the inherent issues involved in adopting outside of one's race. White people tend to think that "not seeing color", money and love will conquer the issues of racism - something that they cannot, under any circumstances, understand.

    EDIT:

Well LC - so nice of you to question my integrity.

I am trying to find it and have asked some other people who I know read it to help me. So far, just to prove that it exists here are these links from the blog of, gasp, an adoptive parent who read it:

    http://american-family.org/2005/12/20/ca...

    http://american-family.org/2005/12/20/bl...

But the links to the actual ARTICLE seem to be expired. I am trying to find the text elsewhere and believe me, if I do, I will be more than happy to post it.

Just because I don't share your views doesn't mean I'm lying.

  11. you got a point but im sure they adopt white kids too! just not as much compared to the minorities.

  12. First of all, I would love to see the "article" that dory claims to have read.  Dory, please post a link to it.

I have asked this question before on other sites and I have gotten two honest answers, and a bunch of stupid ones.

The first is that there are more minority children available in many parts of the country.  However, in many midwestern and northern states, there are just as many caucasian children as minorities placed for adoption.  Caucasian is still the majority race in this country, but overall there are more minorities than caucasians.  That means that percentagewise there are likely to be more minorities in the adoption system than caucasians.

The second reason is that minorities who adopt often have very strong traditions and cultural backgrounds.  They want to share those with others of the same race.  For example, African American families very often have very strong ties to African American culture, including holidays, foods, and rites of passage.  They feel a responsibility to bring those to children that they suspect would not get them otherwise.

It bothers me when people say that adoptive parents that insist upon adopting a child of their own race are racist.  they are not being racist, and they are not being closed minded.  They have their reasons and, unless it is because they feel that any race other than their own is lower or less worthy, we really shouldn't question their motives.

I hope that this answered your question.

  13. Maybe there are more white families that can't get pregnant. I just really hope that you aren't losing any sleep over this. Just be glad that there are people who want to do such a wonderful thing for the less fortunate.
