As far as tack I just purchased a new Saddle Pad, Leather lead with chain,

Clothing: I have a pair of breeches, Paddock boots (black), Black Chaps, White Button up shirt.. Good Condition Saddle, girth, Newer Bridle, New bit, Is their any rules on what type of bit you can use. I use a kimberwick bit my horse loves it but is it illegal because I have another bit.

  1. Since it is just a schooling show you shouldn't have to be in full show attire, they all differ but majority don't call for it.

Polish your boots, you always want to look clean. You don't need a coat at the show, you might even be able to get by with a tight fitting polo shirt of a neutral color, but your button up sounds fine, make sure its a a show shirt though with a collar. embrodier or a pin is nice on the collar. don't wear the chaps unless you get premission from the judge or know that it is ok, your paddock boots should be fine. hairnet is important. you want to fix it so everything but your earlobe is covered. gloves are also important, so make sure you wear them, although it is ok if you forget so if you do don't freak out! you want to keep your stress level as low as possible. sounds like you are very prepared and ready to go though! have fun and good luck! :-]

  2. If you're going to wear halfchaps, they should be the ones that look like the tall-boot leather, and should be polished and shined as such. Here's an example in case you don't know what I'm talking about:

    http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp...

Field boots are preferable, but since it's just a schooling show, it shouldn't be a big deal if the half chaps and your boots are clean, polished, and shiny.

Your girth and bridle should be the same color as your saddle.

A proper show shirt comes with a stock-tie, so if you just got a regular dress shirt, you have to go get a real show shirt, preferably white.

You don't need a stock pin, but it's pretty much the only jewelry you can add to the outfit besides small earrings (small pearls and gold studs are the most popular).

If you can't find rules on bits, bring several with you to the show and ask a show steward before you school your horse.

As long as the helmet isn't brightly colored and isn't a schooling helmet, it should be fine. You don't HAVE to get something velvet, IRH helmets are fine (many in my circuit wear Charles Owens and IRH ATH helmets).

You didn't really need to get another lead... since none of your classes are in-hand.

So let's see, starting at the head...

    Helmet, preferably black.

    Hairnet, matching your hair color.

Small earrings, pearl or gold studs, optional.

Dark show coat, preferably black or navy blue.

Show shirt and detachable collar- preferably white and long-sleeved.

    Stock pin optional- gold.

Black gloves- you usually see leather, but black crochet is fine.

    Khaki breeches

    Black or brown leather belt

Boots- field boots best (need bootsocks if not zip-up), black paddock boots and fine-grain half-chaps okay.

And have you thought about getting your horse there? and horse care supplies and keeping him cool and calm?

There's a TON of stuff you need for caring for your horse at a show. If you need to know any of that stuff, post another question.

  3. Seeing as it's a local schooling show it shouldn't be as strict on dress code as a rated/recognized show. I think kimberwicks are allowed, I'm pretty sure anyway, but you should bring both bits with you just in case. Clean your tack up nice and polish your boots and clean your chaps however you can. If your breeches are a beige sort of color then they are fine. You really should have a show jacket but it's not really a necessity at local shows. Also, a pair of black (preferably leather) gloves, a black crop, black (velvet)helmet or cover, hairnets, etc. Good luck at your show!!

  4. I would advise checking the classes and if any conflict..I'm not sure..but I would check if you can show in :

*****Class #12-Walk/Trot..and still be able to show in an over fence class where you have to canter.

*****Class #15-Under Saddle what? W/T/C..if so then I wonder if you can also show in Class #12 which is W/T only.

I would think you could call the place having the show and ask your questions..or perhaps ask your trainer.

Unless your 13 or under I believe you wear breeches and tall boots..not sure if they have to have laces though.  A show shirt with a choker or ratcatcher, helmet, belt, and jacket.  At times they may make the jackets optional if it is very hot. And maybe gloves.  I know running martingales are not allowed and standing over fences but not flat classes.

You won't need your chaps except maybe for warming up.

My suggestion would be to check out YouTube and look at some videos to get a picture of what the riders look like.  Check out websites like Dover and Bit of Britian..they specialize in this discipline and might have riders on their staff that could answer some of your questions.

Good Luck!!  Have a great show!!

Even though it is a schooling show you want to look proper.

  5. You have to wear tall field boots, the ones with the laces. You also have to have a hunt coat and a dress shirt. Your dress shirt will have a collar, you need a pin. If you wear earrings they need to be small. You need a hair net to tuck your hair up neatly. You need either a velvet show helmet or a velvet helmet cover for your regular helmet. Your horse can only wear a standard caveson, no flash nosebands, etc. There are also restrictions on bits.

I'm not 100% sure but I think USEF has the rules for the hunter classes. If you're going to be showing you should have the appropriate clothes even if you just start with a fun show. You should also train in the bit and bridle you plan on using to show.
