  1. I'm with the first two answers.  I wouldn't be surprised if most (if not all) of the surgery is out of pocket.

  2. Even though others may have the same insurance COMPANY you do, that does not mean that you all have the same type of PLAN.  You would need to discuss it with the Plastic Surgeon and your insurance company.

  3. Good luck.  United American is not a major medical provider.  They do not meet the qualifications to be called a major medical insurance policy.  They have limits on each procedure that is covered and a dollar amount for those procedures.  You can usually find this by looking through your policy.  I suggest after you complete all post-op care you shop for a major medical insurance plan.  You can read about major medical insurance in the individual health section of http://www.lvhealthins.com

  4. I answered a similar question about United American recently...here's the answer I gave there:

The hospital system I work for sees a fair share of United American patients.

Most of the patients end up owing tons of money on their bills. Their United American policies pay only a set amount per day (or per incident, whatever the case may be), and the patient is liable for the rest of the charges.

I suppose one positive for the patient is that they get the benefit of the discounted pricing, so it does reduce their liability more than not having any insurance at all.

(Example - Billed charges for a service $10K. United American might negotiate the total bill down to $7K. United will still only pay their maximum, but the patient is only liable for the difference up to $7K vs. up to $10K.)

That being said, a patient could probably negotiate a comparable discount themselves directly with the hospital, as opposed to paying a premium to United American.

I'd probably have some reservations about purchasing one of their policies for myself, knowing that I could still get hit with a huge hospital bill anyhow.

P.S. From a hospital employee's perspective, I will say that they are fairly reliable about paying the portion of the bill that they are supposed to pay. (Its just that their portion is a fairly small chunk of the overall bill.)
