The Ganga River is a sacred Hindu River.  The Ganga water is holy water.  The water may be holy but the people get dirty and wash in the river and other bodily discharges.  I assume some animals do too.  700 million people using the river as a ritual holy cleansing pool (including bathing and other soiling processes) is bound to produce waste matter.  

    Most all in the catchment area have a vial of Ganga water in their homes and consider it sacred.  Solutions for the people of the Ganga River can be difficult.  The river is sacred.  The river is polluted.  How do you clean up a polluted sacred river?  Building waste treatment plants is a good start.  Maybe Hydroelectric dams (if that is permissible).  Also, enacting laws that can make the Ganga River a cleaner and more productive place for India and Bangladesh.
