Former Chelsea assistant first team coach believes Carlo Ancelotti should not be sacked
Ray Wilkins, the former Chelsea assistant manager, said he felt that the Blues boss Carlo Ancelotti should not be sacked at the end of the season. The Italian manager is expected to face a Stamford Bridge exit after failing to deliver any silverware this
season.
His first season at the club was highly successful, as he led the London side to their very first domestic double of the English Premier League and the FA Cup. However, he has been unable to repeat his success this season.
The lack of trophies has led to rumors that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is looking for a replacement for the former AC Milan manager. The Russian billionaire has been through five managers so far, since he took over the club in 2003.
This is the first time http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 have ended up without a trophy since Abramovich started pouring in his generous contributions. After which he expected the coveted UEFA Champions League or even just the English Premier League.
The current season makes it understandable that the Blues owner wants a change in management at the club. He has apparently been on the look-out for a replacement and has narrowed down his choices to Guus Hiddink and Andre Villas Boas.
Wilkins does not agree with the impending decision to sack Ancelotti, claiming the problem was more with the players than the management. Having been the care-taker and assistant first team coach, the Englishman has some idea of how the club works.
Wilkins said while speaking to reporters, “I don't think it needs a radical change... but they certainly need new players to freshen the place up. Wholesale changes, starting from the coach, would be the wrong way to go.”
Wilkins himself was a victim of Abramovich’s “sacking spree”, which saw the assistant first team coach face a Stamford Bridge exit at the beginning of this season. He still maintains he was not given a reason for the untimely and unexpected sacking.
While his departure coincided with the mid-season slump the Blues faced, Wilkins insisted the coach or the ageing players were not to be blamed for that. He recommended a few changes in the squad, which would improve the overall performance.
He continued, “Chelsea have a nucleus of players, I know a lot is spoken about how old these players are but trust me the fitness levels are exceptionally high. The age thing does not really creep in. They do have the fitness levels of younger men.”
A host of the existing Chelsea players are expected to be sold in the summer because they are considered too old, that list includes http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Frank-Lampard-c14097.
Wilkins revealed he did not necessarily feel the sale of these players and the arrival of new, younger replacements would be the solution to fixing Chelsea’s disappointing season. With two matches remaining this season in the English Premier League, the
future of Ancelotti will be decided at the end of this substandard campaign.
