FIVB Volleyball Championship 2010: Brazil claims hard-earned third round victory against Czech Republic
The defending world champions, Brazil clashed with Czech Republic in their opening third round match of 2010 FIVB Men's Volleyball World Championship. The match was held on Monday at the Palalottomatica Sports Hall in Rome, Italy.
It covered five flights and created a lot of suspense as both teams attacked each other with full power and kept the audience amazed for more than two hours. Around 3,700 spectators witnessed the five-set thriller.
After a bruising battle, Brazil managed to knock-out Czech Republic by posting 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 25-21, and 15-8). Coach Bernardo Rezende's men outshined and collected huge applause from the spectators.
With this victory, Brazil also broke Czech Republic's four-game winning streak.
First Set:
Brazil opened the first set on a good note and built an early lead of 3-1 but Czech Republic quickly chased the score and tied the game at 4-4. They were equipped with some of their best players, who served the ball in the right spot.
Brazil's Endres Morilo helped his team’s score rise after the second technical timeout. Brazil once again picked a lead of two points (16-14). Czech hitters tried to break their rhythm and used different techniques for this.
But, Santana Rodrigo did an amazing job for Brazil and blocked many powerful spikes. In the end, the score stretched to 25-20 with Brazil declaring their first-set victory.
Second Set:
Czech Republic came up with a heavy strike in the second set, ruining everything that layed in their way. They seemed raged up with the loss of first set and hence attacked Brazil with some superb line-shots.
Czech captain, Hudecek Ondrej took control of the situation and led his team in the right direction. They had their first jumpstart by earning five points after a few successful attack attempts. The Brazilian side relied on Morilo for attack but Platenik
Peter of Czech Republic restricted him.
Morilo could add only 6 points to his team’s score. Czech Republic recovered from their shock defeat in the first set and seemed to have caught the Brazilians from the scruff. They returned the score to Brazil and snatched second set victory by hitting 25-22
on the scoreboard.
Third Set:
Brazil suffered the second set loss due to their faulty defence. So, they called in some of their better substitutes in the third set. On the other hand, Czech Republic seemed desperate to enhance their lead.
After their second set win, Czech players looked pumped up as they kept on hitting spikes with full power. The pressure shifted to the Brazilian side as they failed to match their performance. The battle for supremacy took different flavours during the third
set but still the situation remained un-decided until the last moments.
Finally, Czech Republic ended the third set with 25-23 and built a lead of 2-1 in the game.
Fourth Set:
Brazil were in deep trouble after having lost two sets back-to-back. They re-aligned their set-up and responded positively, forcing Czech Republic to stay behind the attack-line. The Brazilian team put up a joint effort and managed to secure the fourth set
win with 25-21.
Final Set:
Both teams took on some huge pressure as they played the 15-point golden set. At this moment, the game was tied at 2-2 so it was the final chance to clinch the ultimate victory.
Brazil's Morilo formed a good combo with Amaral Dante and contributed to the score. Brazil won the final set by 15-8 and declared match victory over Czech Republic.
