FIA allows two DRS zones, one activation point for upcoming European Grand Prix – Formula 1 news
International Automobile Federation (FIA) has recently revealed that Valencia will have two Drag Reduction System zones for the European Grand Prix with just one activation point.
One activation point means that if a car successfully makes an overtake, then only that car will be allowed to activate its DRS in the second zone while the overtaken car will not be allowed to do this.
This was introduced at the Canadian Grand Prix for the first time but since the conditions of the track were quite unstable due to the heavy rain, the system did not prove to be as efficient as the officials expected.
This system is going to make overtaking too easy and most of the people including the reigning world champion Sebastian Vettel stated that this makes overtaking a bit too easy.
“In the end you have to be careful about how big you create the zone because obviously it can make overtaking too easy, like I think it was in Canada. If you are right behind and you open the wing then the other guy has no chance to defend, which is surely
not the idea. But we are playing around and it is a new system. We are still early in the season and everybody is still learning with it,” he told the media.
Nevertheless, the difference between the two DRS zones of Valencia and Canada is that the DRS zones of Canada were divided by just a chicane while the DRS zones in Valencia have a four-turn gap between them.
The first DRS zone’s detection point is before turn 8 and the drivers will be able to active the system after crossing 285 meters following turn 10.
The second usage point is going to be 35 meters after crossing turn 14. Let’s see how will the combination put forward by the FIA works in Valencia this weekend.
