Epic Games would consider a Gears of War FPS – Video Games Update
Executive Producer for Epic Games, Rod Fergusson, has not ruled out the possibility of there being a first person shooter (FPS) Gears of War (Gears) game in the future.
Gears of War is a third person action cover based shooter which was developed by Epic Games and released on the Xbox 360 in 2006. It was also the first Unreal Engine 3 game to land on consoles. Gears of War was published by Microsoft and after it’s phenomenal
success on the Xbox 360, it was released for Microsoft Windows PC a year later in 2007.
Gears was the killer title that the Xbox 360 needed after the console came out and was dry on exclusives and third party support. It can be arguably said that Gears of War started the trend of cover based shooters in this generation. Not that Gears was the
first of its kind, there have been various cover based third person shooters before it, but Gears of War was the one that made the genre popular.
The first Gears game is considered by many to be the first game to take the true leap into next-gen at the time it came out. It was a success with the critics and the fans as the Xbox 360 version of the game has managed to move over 5.95 million copies since
launch and has a ranking of 94 percent on Metacritic.
Epic Games continued the story in the two sequels that followed in 2008 and 2011. Gears of War 2 and 3 pretty much replicated the success of the original title and is considered as two of the best Xbox 360 exclusives to date. With the end of the ‘Marcus
Fenix’ story arc in Gears of War 3, Epic Games announced that it was collaborating with the polish developer, People Can Fly (creators of Bulletstorm and Painkiller), to work on Gears of War: Judgment which will be a prequel to the original trilogy.
When asked if the studio would ever consider doing a FPS gears game, Executive Producer Rod Fergusson stated in an interview with OXM that, “I’m a big believer in never say never; it’s all about what’s interesting in the industry at the time and where fans
want us to take it. We don’t want to say never but it’s not on the top of my mind either. We look at what makes sense and move in that direction.”
This most likely means that Epic Games will probably stick to the successful third person formula for Gears this generation; however since the developer hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of a Gears FPS, fans might yet see a spin-off next generation.
