He's a very well behaved dog. I currently live in Maine and I'm looking to relocat to the Fort Mill area but have found that many places have breed restrictions which I have never heard of until now. Any suggestions would be helpful.

  1. Since a bit bull is one of the breeds an insurance carrier will not insurance the home against attacks, most landlords will not allow the breed on the property because they are not covered by their insurance if the dog would attack another animal or human

  2. You will have a hard time, they have to pay a LOT more insurance for a dangerous breed.     Recently, a "well behaved" pit bull literally ripped his 11 year old "master" into little pieces and spread him through out the house for the child's mother to find.    This breed has long and consistent history of killing their family members, as well as other children and adults.

You might try getting the dog bonded and insured yourself, it will cost you about 2k a year.   A landlord MIGHT agree to rent since the dog is insured itself.

  3. You own a 'dangerous breed'.  Regardless of how friendly you think your dear dog is, insurance records indicate that, when your breed DOES decide to attack, the damaged are horrendous, due to the very strong jaw structures of such breeds.  If you insist on keeping this dog, be prepared to pay (and heavily) if you find any rental complex which will allow this dog.

  4. You are going to have a hard time and there is nothing that you can do to make it any easier, aside from getting rid of the dog.

I have friends & relatives that have pit bulls and they can be great dogs. Of course any breed can attack. No bashing here.

I had a sister that lost her homeowner's policy because she owned a pit mix. She had to get rid of the dog in order to obtain a policy on her own home.

Breed restrictions have been in place for several years now in many locations.

The breed is banned in many localities and many insurance companies will not cover property if there is a pit (or several other breeds) on the premises. The potential liability is too high.

Landlord's will not allow them because they will lose their insurance coverage. Even if you were to carry your own insurance liability coverage, the landlord's insurer will not allow a pit. If your dog happened to bite someone, the landlord (& their insurer) would be liable as the property owner.
