With the top four seeds receiving byes into the second round, and eighth seed Mardy Fish withdrawing from the tournament, only three seeds were in action on the first round. Horacio Zeballos was the only one not to make it through - the seventh seed retired from his match against Rainer Schuettler with a shoulder injury.
