David Ferrer topples Alex Bogomolov Jr. to power into the quarters – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Top seed, David Ferrer, got the better of the Russian challenger, Alex Bogomolov Jr., in straight sets at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Thursday. He juggled up a 6-4, 6-2 success against the world number 90 to power into the quarter-finals at this ATP
(Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The Spanish number two stayed on track to bid for his six year-to-date title after trouncing the 29-year-old in their first encounter. After earning the glory in one hour and 23 minutes, Ferrer took lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 1-0 against
Bogomolov and secured a place in the final eight at this indoor hard court event.
“It was a difficult match. The first set was close but after I won the set, I was better and more consistent,” said the jubilant Spaniard in a courtside interview after conquering the Russian.
The world number five, Ferrer assertively entered the Putra Indoor Stadium. He brushed off both breakpoints he came across to keep his entire serves. The Spaniard got the breakthrough in the ninth game and clicked the opener with a 6-4 win. He converted
one out of four break opportunities to his advantage.
Ferrer maintained his intensity in the following set and after breaking his opponent’s serve twice, he jumped to a 4-1 lead. Apart from losing his serve in the sixth game, the Spaniard bagged the last two games and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The Spaniard is enjoying his career best season this circuit. He has bagged five titles and secured semi-final berths at several tournaments. The veteran also led his nation into the final showdown at the Davis Cup.
Ferrer will square off against the Dutch challenger, Igor Sijsling. He commented about his next match-up:
“I have played him a few times. Few weeks ago, I beat him in the US Open and it was a tough match, so I will have to play really good against him.”
Sijsling stunned the fifth seed, Feliciano Lopez, in both sets’ tie-breaker to set up this epic encounter.
