Dave Perry labels Apple as the biggest threat to gaming consoles
Co-founder and CEO of cloud platform gaming Gaikai, Dave Perry has gone on to label Apple as the biggest threat to gaming consoles.
Gaikai is an open ended cloud gaming platform. What that means, is that the need to physically own a copy of games is completely shattered. The platform lets gamers use its services and play the latest games instantly. It is not restricted to any internet
connection and it avoids the need to download or install games. It allows users to simply click and access all the games they would ever want to play.
In a recent interview, Perry was asked about the future of cloud gaming and whether consoles should be worried about how this new field was developing. He went on to reply by bluntly stating that cloud gaming was not a threat to console gaming, but in fact,
it was Apple who presented the greatest threat to them.
Perry is quoted to have said, “I think the concern there is that they're generating hardware so quickly now. If you're creating and shipping new hardware every 12 months, and during that 12 months you're also giving pretty impressive upgrades, the features
that people want, and you're giving them those every six months and hardware every 12 months, I think the idea that you would have five to seven years on hardware refreshes is becoming a technical problem.”
He then narrowed down his comments and targeted handheld gaming devices. He feels that with Apple pushing the boundaries on their handhelds, the handheld gaming consoles really needed to step their game up, or they could soon become history.
Perry went on to add, “I think the handhelds are getting challenged very aggressively by the mobile phones”
Perry then went on to talk about iPhones and how they were practical, while delivering the best of both worlds, which included communication and gaming. As a result, he feels that kids and adults are getting more inclined to using their mobiles on the move,
instead of using handhelds, since they can do just about everything.
Having talked about Apple and how it is more than likely to take over handhelds in the near future, Perry turned his attention back to cloud gaming. He went on to admit that at the moment, the biggest problem that cloud gaming was facing, was latency. The
fact that not everyone one has access to high speed internet really limits their ability to use the service and that is something Gaikai are going to focus on in the near future.
Apple have really gone on to push their boundaries and are looking to capture a whole new market segment. With the iPad, they have shown that they can make their handhelds very practical and accessible. Handheld consoles are going to have to try and make
their devices a little more social and follow down Apple’s path, if they are to try and prevent Apple from taking over.
