I recommend, whil you are still young enough to do some internships. It may or may not pay, but it looks great on your resumes and most companies are willing to let you in on their gig if you are willing to do so without pay.

Are you going through college? My step-daughter was a dorm attendant (RA) for 3 years, which not only paid her, but also gave her a discount on her student housing.

If you are not going to college, but have your high school diploma, then yes, retail is one option. Restaurants as a server, host or hostess is another. Movie Theatres are always looking for staff, especially in the times when its not summer and the kids have gone back to school.

There are also business offices that are prepared to get you in their doors.

The best way to get your feet wet is do what I did. Go to the temporary or staffing agencies and let them know specifically what you are looking for. Be prepared to present a resume and go through some office skills testing.

They do all the work and all you have to do is show up when they present you with an opportunity.

Finally, there is another option which is Care.com. Its not a plug, I don't work for them. I just found them this afternoon. What you do is plug your info in with relation to either baby sitting, house cleaning, elder sitting or pet sitting and offer your services.
