China Open Premier Super Series: Simon Santoso stuns Peter Hoeg Gade in Men’s Singles quarter-final
Indonesia’s spirited shuttler Simon Santoso have proved his mettle as he has defeated higher ranked Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark in the Men’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 China Open Premier Super Series, on Friday, November 25, in Shanghai, China.
The World Number 11, Santoso played with courage and remained successful in beating the World Number Four Peter Gade in a mouth-watering three-set contest, which took almost 73 minutes of attacking badminton from both sides.
The start of the first set was thrilling between the two experienced shuttlers as they remained toe-to-toe until the score reached at 5-5. The score progressed closely until the break where Simon was ahead of his rival by reaching at 11-9.
After the break, the Danish shuttler started to manipulate the front-court area of the back-hand side of Santoso and remained successful in breaking the flow of the Indonesian. Santoso also made a few unforced mistakes at the ending points and lost the set
with a margin of 15-21.
The second game was mouth-watering for the huge local crowd as both shuttlers remained neck-to-neck until the interval. Until the interval in the second game, the Indonesian was slightly leading the game with an 11-10 score.
After the interval, Peter Gade levelled the score by playing aggressive game. However, Santoso’s aggressive and positive approach helped him extend his lead to win the game with a convincing margin of 21-15.
In the final game of this superb fight, Simon played wonderful badminton this time as he played with superb precision. He was not leaving any space for his experienced opponent and remained successful in taking a convincing lead of 11-6 until the interval
in the deciding game.
Santoso remained dominant in the second half of the final game as kept the pace at the maximum level and played with wonderful aggression. His attacking play spared no chance for the Danish shuttler to dominate the rallies anymore. Santoso finished up the
third set with a superb score of 21-16. The end result of this quarter-final contest was 15-21, 21-15 and 21-16.
In the semi-final showdown, Santoso will be up against the winner of China’s Chen Long and Chen Jin.
