Chili Davis leaves Boston Red Sox, joins as Oakland A's hitting coach -MLB Update
Having spent only a year with the Boston Red Sox as their hitting coach, Chili Davis, has decided to leave the organisation and instead, join the Oakland Athletics coaching staff with the same designation on Friday, November 25, 2011.
Since Oakland is a young team as compared to their more veteran counterparts in Major League Baseball (MLB) like the Red Sox, Davis considers this an opportunity for him to grow as a coach.
“I’m excited about it,” Davis said by phone Friday night after the news was announced. “I like the staff we have in Oakland. It’s a well thought out, well put together staff.  I think it’s a staff that can help these young players develop into competitors.
[Manager] Bob Melvin is a great guy…I’m looking forward to it…It was offered and I accepted.
Some might think that Davis is leaving due to some misunderstanding with the Red Sox organisation, but according to him, they have been great and it is more of a personal choice.
“I’m ecstatic about it. I’m very excited, very thankful to the Red Sox. ‘Appreciation’ is an understatement for what they’ve done for me. Gratitude is more like it.”
Unfortunately for the Red Sox club, this is not the first staff member that has left them for another team ever since the 2011 season ended. First-base coach, Ron Johnson and staff assistant, Rob Leary, also left after their contracts were not renewed by
Boston.
Pitching coach, Curt Young, is also already with the Oakland A’s, which could be signalling more members leaving soon.
Davis will be replacing, Gerald Perry, who was with the Oakland A’s organisation since the start of the 2011 MLB season, was let go by the team after they considered him not able to improve their team and are certainly looking forward to the new inductee
to make the required difference.
The A’s manager, Bob Melvin, is a long time friend of Chili Davis, which could be regarded as one of the reasons for his inclusions in Oakland. It will certainly be thrilling to see whether the new hitting coach will be able to make that difference on the
team or not.
