Charlie Whiting describes movable rear wing, says it will not affect Pirelli tyres – Formula 1 news
International Automobile Federation (FIA) race director Charlie Whiting has said that the movable rear wing will be used in 2011 Formula 1 season according to the given rules and regulations and that it will not affect the performance of the Kinetic Energy
Recovery System or Pirelli tyres.
Whiting said that the wing was actually proposed by the teams to make overtaking meaningful. He described the use of the movable rear wing or the Drag Reduction System and said that the wing will be activated by the driver but when allowed by the authorities.
He explained, “Proximity to the car in front will be detected before the straight on which the wing may be activated, if the car behind is less than one second behind the driver will be told that his system is 'armed’.”
He further added that the DRS will be used once per lap when the car is only 600 meters from the corner.
There were many speculations that this system will only confuse the drivers and the spectators as well. Talking on this, Whiting said that there will be marks on the track where the proximity is applicable and where the car is armed and moreover the broadcasters
will be told to relay a signal to the spectators.
Talking about the speed boost that this wing is supposed to provide, Whiting said that it will be more than 10-12 km per hour. He also mentioned that although the control of the wing will always be with the drivers, but any use without authorisation of the
race officials will be penalised.
Although the critics have said that Pirelli tyres will degrade more if extra acceleration is induced by KERS or DRS, Whiting said that these systems are not interrelated and wing will not compromise the tyres degradation.
He summarised the rules applied from now on as the ban on F-duct, which was introduced by the McLaren team. He also said that the gearbox is to be used in five races than four to reduce the budget of racing.
