Captaining England in one-dayers is Alastair Cook’s toughest challenge – cricket news
Alastair Cook’s reign as England’s one-day skipper is about to begin as Poms and Sri Lanka lock horns on Tuesday, June 28 at Kennington Oval, London.
This match will be the toughest challenge that Cook has faced thus far. The left-hander, who last played an ODI for his country back in March, 2010, will not only have to cope with the pressure of playing after a long period of
time but will be leading the side for the first time as well.
Cooky feels privileged in leading England’s one day team. The left-hander is totally focused on the game against Sri Lanka. Cooky has stressed to his team members to forget other matters and set their sights on becoming a major
threat in ODI’s.
"I just see myself as the one-day captain. I'm only concentrating on tomorrow's game and doing the best job I can. We can worry about the other stuff later. We are very separate in what we do and it's a huge honour for me to lead
this one-day side forward," said the English ODI skipper.
Cook has never been known as one day player, he is more of a Test specialist. He is a defensive opening batsman and struggles when forced to score runs quickly. It will be a great Test for the batsman, who will have to transform
his game if he wants to succeed.
Recently, the left-hander has been in great form with the bat. He played a major role in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 by scoring 766 runs in the Ashes series. Before the series his place is the Test squad was in doubt.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026 has played in 26 ODI’s since his debut in 2006. If everything goes according to plan the batsman’s captaincy debut will be against the same side against whom he first made public appearance.
"I think my one-day game has evolved since I last played. In http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bangladesh-c747 I scored runs and scored them quickly so I know I have the talent and skill to do it. Of course I'm nowhere near the finished article, I'm 26 years old, I've
got a lot of work to do and I'm prepared for that,” said Cook.
The series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 could be make or break for Poms leader. If he performs well in both roles it can pave way for his Test captaincy as well. But in other case he may also lose his place in ODI as many other players are
lining up for that spot.
