Can avocados grow in Vancouver BC?

im growing an avocado in my house from a seed, and when it gets big enough I'll put it outside, our winters can get to -9 Celceus so im wondering if it will survive, do you think it will?

  1. The thing about avocado trees is that you need two trees for it to bear fruit....

    Most likely you have a Hass (or Haas) avocado.  A Hass is cold hardy to -1C.  Any much colder, if left unprotected, the tree will freeze and die.


  2. The UBC Botanical Garden tried growing a couple of avocados but they were killed during last winter's cold spell. If you're going to put them outside, they'll probably need some protection (ie. burlap) in cold years.
