CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge: Boland v KwaZulu-Natal Inland – Match Update
Boland 153 v KwaZulu-Natal Inland 126 - KwaZulu-Natal Inland trail by 27 runs with 5 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
On the first day of the ongoing three-day match between Boland and KwaZulu-Natal Inland, the latter trail by 27 runs with 5 wickets remaining in the 1st innings at Boland Park, Paarl on Thursday, December 15, 2011.
After winning the toss, KwaZulu-Natal Inland invited the hosts to bat first in a bid to give their bowlers a go at the home team.
Disaster struck on the penultimate delivery of the first over, when Boland lost their opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Godfrey-Cyril-Stevens-c60241, with only a run on the board.
This was a perfect start for the visiting side, as they managed to rattle the hosts early on.
On the third delivery of the next over, number-three batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-Nackerdien-c64245, was also sent back to the pavilion without scoring a run.
The demise of two wickets, early in the day, wrecked havoc in the Boland camp, however, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Warren-Shaun-Groeneveld-c96245 and Uwe Birkenstock batted their side to stability as they subdued the offensive launched by their opponents.
The two batsmen hammered 46 runs in the third-wicket partnership to steered their team out of trouble.
Groeneveld, then departed after scoring a sensible knock of 17 runs, while Birkenstock fell after playing an impressive knock of 61 runs. At the time of his wicket, Boland were on 95 runs.
Later, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hillroy-Henrico-Paulse-c63185 clobbered 22 runs each to help their side amass 153 runs at the end of their innings.
From KwaZulu-Natal Inland, Brady Barends and Attie Maposa bagged three wickets each.
Coming out to bat, Inland did not have a huge tally to overcome and had a fair chance of taking a lead in the match, by hammering a massive total in their first innings.
Openers, Stephan Myburgh and Chad Barron gave their side an opening stand of 43 runs as they played impressive shots, leaving the hosts flabbergasted.
However, the side suffered a batting collapse in the middle, as they lost five wickets before stumps on the first day due to which they could only bolster 126 runs.
Opener Barron is still standing unbeaten on 29 runs while, lower-middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sarel-Johannes-Erwee-c88810, is on a tally of 19 runs.
From Boland, Hillroy Paulse and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Clairmonte-Christopher-Lewis-c51079 Raubenheimer bagged two wickets each.
