Seems like more and more PDs/sheriff's departments are insisting that the media use the term "rendered safe"(in print AND on the airwaves!) instead of the more socially appropriate "blown up safely"...why?

To me, saying "rendered safe" is "cold-hearted" and rude, when cops should be more respectable to their city officials and instead use the other term...

JMO...

  1. Are you kidding?  "Blown up" looks and sounds more rude than rendered safe.  Police are under so much scrutiny being in the public's eyes 24/7/365 that they are have to be more PC and say rendered safe.  Life isn't a video game where everything is blown up.  There's a reason for everything and just because you don't understand the verbiage and why it is used dosen't mean that the police are cold hearted and rude.  Now that's JMO....

  2. Rendered safe can also include disarming or defusing the device instead of exploding it. More evidence can be gathered from the device if it is unexploded.

  3. I must confess, I don't get your point.

How is "blown up safely" more "socially appropriate?"

And how is saying "rendered safe" in anyway "cold-hearted" or "rude" or in any way not "respectable to their city officials?"

To "render safe," using various "Render Safe Procedures (RSP)," is in fact the proper technical term for what a bomb technician or bomb squad does.

While in the vast majority of cases, the easiest and best tactic is in fact to detonate the device in a safe manner, it is sometimes not a viable tactic, for a variety of possible reasons.  The actual techniques used by bomb techs to render a device safe are generally regarded as secret to try to prevent bombers from attempting to circumventing these techniques.  Sometimes it can be as simble as replacing a safety device, etc.
