I have an 03 MPV.  Had the same problem, although mine lost power over a short period of time.  There is a filter that is somewhere under the dash that needs to be replaced.  I'm not sure where but they have to take the dash out to do it.  My mechanic knew about it.  I blew good for 2 yrs after that but now blower motor is out.  blower motor is 400.00 - mazda is a rip off!
