Ashbeer Saini wins the Eastern India Open Amateur at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club
Ashbeer Saini eagled the 33rd hole of the Eastern India Open Amateur, to record a victory over Karan Taunk, at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, on Tuesday, December 25, 2012.
Right from the beginning of the match-play event, Saini kept on pressurising his rival and sealed the victory in style with three holes to play.
Saini comes from the same region as the two-time Asian Tour winner last season, Gaganjeet Bhullar.
That is the reason why Saini counts his fellow Kaputhala native as a perfect role model and is looking forward to follow in the footsteps of his idol in the time to come.
Gaganjeet Bhullar is currently one of the hottest sensations on the Asian Tour, and is being lauded as the next Jeev Milkha Singh, the 20-time professional winner from India.
“I am quite inspired by the exploits of Gaganjeet Bhullar and would one day try and emulate him,” said the champion.
The Eastern India Amateur is the oldest event in the history of the game after the British Open. Saini said that it was an honour for him to become a part of the winning league of the second longest-running golf event in the world.
“I do not have words to describe the feeling after winning such a title and that too at the home of Indian golf – Royal Calcutta Golf Club. I will cherish the moments forever,” he said
Tata Steel was the sponsor of the tournament. Farzan Heerjee, the Head Corporate Relations, Tata Steel, said that the company is consistently working for the development of the game in the region.
According to him, such events can contribute a lot towards improving the standards of the game. In addition to that, they also provide opportunities to the local players to polish their skills, in a bid to play on the bigger tours around the world.
“We are happy to present a platform for these youngsters to showcase their talent while preparing them for bigger platforms,” Heerjee said. “We are also very keen to grow the game from the grass root level which will help young players to take up the game”.
