Arnond Vongvanij storms into contention at the King’s Cup
Arnond Vongvanij stormed into contention for the top spot, after carding a five-under par 67 in the third round of the King’s Cup, on Saturday, December 1, 2012. The Asian Tour event is being staged at the Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club.
Vongvanij, who marked a strong start to his campaign in Thailand by posting scores of 65 and 70 in the first two rounds, shared the fourth spot, entering the final round.
Starting on the front nine, the Thai star bogeyed the first hole. However, he did not allow the blemish to overhaul his overall confidence in his game.
Therefore, he bounced back strongly with back-to-back birdies on the second and the third hole. He then added another two shots on the sixth and the ninth hole to reach the turn in three-under.
Afterwards, he carded another birdie on the 10th hole, prior to finishing his third-round campaign with eight pars in a row.
At the end of the day, he found himself trailing the leader Mardan Mamat by just three strokes. Mamat carded a six-under par 66 to accumulate a three-round total of 17-under par 199.
The highlight of Vongvanij performance included an amazing 50-foot birdie putt on the third hole.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, he stated that he was pleased with his performance, especially with his game on the greens.
According to him, his control over his putter was the main reason behind his sparkling performance in the first three rounds.
“I started off with a bogey but I made a long putt on two and holed out form about 50 yards on three so overall it was a good round,” he said. “I also putted really well and kept the ball in play. I’m very happy with the way I played this year”.
He also expressed his pleasure in being partnered with Thongchai Jaidee, who is regarded as one of the most successful players on the Asia Tour.
“I’ve always wanted to play with Thongchai and it was great playing alongside him,” he said. “I never had the chance to play a competitive round with Thongchai so it was a great experience. The family here definitely makes me feel a lot at ease here”.
