All about Import-Export Business in USA?

I want to start an Import-Export business with my friend based in India. Does anyone know what all formalities do I have to do in USA to start importing things from my firneds company in India. Is it good to have 2 companies registered one in India and one in USa or can I directly asks our client to export material directly from my friends company in India?

Do we need to have Import liscence for the US company( if we plan to have 2 companies)?

How to contact the Dealers? Do I need to have a middle man involved? what are the risks of such a business?
