Alex Bogdanovic beats Devin Britton in second round qualifier – Hall of Fame Championships 2011
World number 403 Alex Bogdanovic of Great Britain came back from a set down to overcome world number 688 Devin Britton of USA in three sets 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 in the second round of the qualifying draw at the Campbell’s Hall of Fame
Tennis Championships in Newport on Sunday. The match lasted for an hour and 46 minutes.
Britton took the early lead as he broke the British in the second game, taking a 2-0 lead. However, Bogdanovic broke back immediately and held his serve in the next game to square off the score at 2-2. At 4-3, the American broke
again and this time he did not allow his opponent to break back, serving out the set at 5-3.
The 20-year-old fired 56 percent of the first serves and three aces in the opening set. Britton claimed 74 percent of the first service points in the first set. On the other hand, Bogdanovic had a low first serve percentage, delivering
a meagre 47 percent of the first serves and winning 56 percent of the points on them. Britton converted both break points he received on Bogdanovic’s serve and saved three of the four break points on his own serve in the first set.
Britton was looking to seal the match quickly as he broke Bogdanovic in the opening game of the second set and consolidated on it to grab a 2-0 lead. However, the British made a great comeback, breaking back in the eighth game
to level the score at 4-4. Bogdanovic broke again in the twelfth game and claimed the set 7-5.
The Brit had an erratic second serve as he committed a horrible seven double faults in the second set. Bogdanovic converted 81 percent of the first serves into points and sealed 38 percent of the receiving points in the second
set. The 27-year-old capitalised on two of the seven break point opportunities he created on Britton’s serve and saved four of the five break points on his own serve in the second set.
With winning momentum on his side, Bogdanovic needed a single break of serve in the final set to clinch it 6-3.
The British had an amazing second serve conversion rate as he converted an incredible 91 percent of the second serves into points in the third set. The left-handed claimed one of the three break points he received on the American’s
serve in the deciding set.
Bogdanovic is drawn to play Mark Verryth of Australia in the final round qualifier.
