Ahmad Alzabidi, Mazen Hesham Ga Sabry move into quarterfinal – Al Hassan Open 2011
Unseeded Jordanian Ahmad Alzabidi beat the lower ranked Egyptian Basem Makram in the first round of the Al Hassan Open 2011.
The two players battled against each other at the Al-Hassan International Squash Center in Amman, Jordan and it took the Home boy just forty minutes to thrash the 25 year-old from Cairo with a score of 11-4, 12-14, 11-2, 11-5.
Commencing to serve first was the Jordanian and he took the bull by the horn as he bagged consecutive points and took the lead. Moreover, he had a good service style and kept control on his serves, not allowing his opponent to break him. He ultimately bagged
the opening round with an 11-4 score.
However, in the second round Makram made a remarkable return as he smashed a Cross-court volley to back corner and then a Cross-court volley to front corner nick. In doing so, he turned the tables on his adversary and clogged the second set with a 14-12
victory.
During the third set the 22 year-old Jordanian leaped back to regain control over the match and Amidst the third set, he restricted his opponent to only a mere two points by using much more advanced methods of variation.
He clogged the final set by smashing a few lob shots with a variation mix so his opponent couldn’t move forward in anticipation. In doing so; he sealed his victory of the match and reserved a spot in the quarterfinal of the event where he will be facing
Egyptian Zahed Mohamed.
The only qualifier who made it into the quarterfinal was Egyptian Mazen Hesham Ga Sabry by thrashing the 24 year-old Dutch, Frank Hartkoren in the first round of the tournament with a score of 11-6, 11-7, 13-15, 11-4.
In the first two sets the Egyptian took on a power play and asserted his dominance by utilizing the technique of using a good lob as he had a lot of time to make a return to the T. This style and technique left his opponent under pressure as he was unable
to make a volley.
In a reversal of fate during the third set, Hartkoren made a return and he bagged one out of the four sets played but that was the only time that he was able to set his tone in the match.
In the end the Egyptian scored against his adversary and reserved a spot in the quarterfinal of the event where he will be facing fourth seeded compatriot Karim Ali Fathi.
