  1. 1. Global competence (as defined in the recently-published National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges (NASULGC) report listed below) is the ability “… not only to contribute to knowledge, but also to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate its meaning in the context of an increasingly globalized world.” The skills that form the foundation of global competence include the ability to work effectively in international settings; awareness of and adaptability to diverse cultures, perceptions and approaches; familiarity with the major currents of global change and the issues they raise; and the capacity for effective communication across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

    2. English is extremely important.

    3. English has consolidated its dominance as the language of the Internet, where 80 percent of the world's electronically stored information is in English, according to David Graddol, a linguist and researcher. See http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/09/a...

    4. Yes. "English has become the second language of everybody," said Mark Warschauer, a professor of education and informatics at the University of California, Irvine. "It's gotten to the point where almost in any part of the world to be educated means to know English." (http://www.iht.com/articles/2007/04/09/a... The fact that I am answering your questions in English, despite the fact that I am not a native speaker of English, further illustrates my point. Good luck with your language studies.
