Rebecca Marino crushes Stephanie Dubois to advance into second round – Bell Challenge 2011
In an all Canadians match, fourth seeded Rebecca Marino eased past Stephanie Dubois in straight sets at the Bell Challenge 2011, an indoor hard court event held in Quebec, Canada. She registered a 6-2, 6-4 victory over her 24-year
old compatriot to advance into the second round on Tuesday.
World number fifty, Marino outclassed her rival in seventy-six minutes on the Canadian hard courts to secure a second round spot on their third meeting. After earning this success, she not only avenged her loss at Johannesburg
last year but also took lead in the head-to-head series by 2-1 against her countrywoman.
20-year-old Marino thundered into the opening set and earned the desiderated break in the opening game. She then held her entire serves through her quick agility and broke her compatriot’s serve again in the seventh game to seal
the opener by winning six games to two.
Marino capitalised on several unforced errors Dubois coughed and although she produced a lower first serve share, the Canadian registered a marvellous 93 percent win on it. She saved the only breakpoint faced and converted half
of the four breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
The higher ranked Canadian lost her way into the final set and after losing her opening serve she went 3-0 down. Marino, however, roared back in the fifth game and eventually levelled the scores at 3-3. After Dubois held her serve
in the proceeding game, the youngster unleashed her skills again to wipe out last three games and clinched the set with a 6-4 win.
The seeded Canadian improved her stats in the final set. She produced a higher first serve share of 55 percent as compared to her compatriot’s 52 percent and converted sixty-seven percent of breakpoint opportunities to her advantage.
Marino then mustered the set by smashing seven ferocious aces.
Up next for the glooming Canadian is the winner of the match between a wild card entrant Aleksandra Wozniak and an American qualifier Gail Brodsky. If Marino continues to play like this, she can definitely excel far in her home
town tournament.
