Question:

Plants on fence posts?

I'd like to have a few plants on my fence posts, but can't search online (UK) for anything. I don't want hanging baskets. I guess something like a window box but much narrower or a plant pot which has a flat side and can be attached to a wall. Any ideas anyone?

  1. There are flat sided pots for hanging against walls.  In the US they are called, curiously, wall planters.  They can be ceramic, wire, plastic..just about anything.

  2. B&Q have a wide range of baskets and cages and stub pots that are flush fitting with a flat wall or post

  3. I'm not a plant and flower person but I know what looks good.

I love it when I see bright bold flowers.  Its very attractive.

Also, the dangley plants look nice.

Sorry I don't know the names of these flowers or plants.

  4. what kind of fence? that have hanging pouches you can get that link up and feed automatic... those are sweet

  5. I think I know what you have in mind - try the link below.

It's a metal ring which you pop your plant pot in to.  It has tiny sticky-out struts at the back and a hook for you to nail to the fence.  They also sell other rings to hang over balconies.

I've ordered from this site, the postage was incredibly fast and they're a really helpful company if you need to contact them.

  6. Ask your greengrocer for small polypropelene potato sacks. They are about the same size as a growbag.

I think I would use use two lengths of timber (2 x 1 inches) to close the bag and use for hanging but tying the neck with a length of cord might be easier. This could be looped over the fence post. Alternatively, put suitable hooks on the wall/fence before you fill the bags.

Fill the with lightweight compost from a new growbag (don't use an old one, that's a false economy).

Cut small horizontal slits in the bags.

Plant anything suitable in the slits. Trailing plants are particularly good. Strawberries and training tomatoes would be excellent. Anything suitable for hanging baskets should do well. Herbs would be great.

Water and feed as you would a hanging basket or window box.

I first saw this idea in my daughter's garden (she worked for a greengrocer) but I think I saw it later on Gardener's World. A quick search didn't find it.

Most garden centres sell the pots you mention.

  7. How about the bagged ones?? Like buzy llizzies? The are planted in plastic sacks which you can hang anywhere.
