Question:

Painting a counter top?

I'm in the process of redoing my bathrooms. I live in a mobile home. They have cheap, tacky counter tops but I can't afford to get new ones just yet, and the contrast is making me crazy. Is there a way to paint or cover and seal them. Something that while not expected to be permanent, will be somewhat lasting, thanks for the help.

  1. Why are you not trying the spray paints

  2. You can get plastic stick-back film which you can just cut to size, peel off, and stick to your counter tops. You can get in lots of different patterns and colors too. I got some from homebase but you can get it in most other DIY stores eg B&Q etc.

    Hope I helped, X.

  3. you could try contact paper, but it won't last long.  painting will definitely not last long.

  4. Clean the surfaces thoroughly. Sand lightly with 120 grit sand paper, then apply "Kilz" brand primer that's specifically recommended for glossy surfaces.Paint with acrylic craft paints. You'll need to do some sort of "faux" finish (granite, marble, etc.) using at least three colors (start with darkest & work you way up to lighter colors). It's not as hard as is sounds: Just use sponges and a light touch.  If you try to just use a solid color it will show every defect & brush mark. Finish with semi-gloss or gloss oil based poly.

With normal use this should last at least a few years.

  5. I say go with formica, it looks good and it`s the cheapest material for counter tops.

  6. if you paint a counter top when something gets put on it it will stick to it and then peel off when you take the thing off
