My husband and I will be headed to Dusseldorf and have 7 days in Germany... we want a little night life and soak in the local atmosphere.. maybe travel to other cities as well. Weisbaden? Munich? Mosel valley? Any suggestions on travel, places to go, etc.

  1. Well, I'm not so enthusiastic with Dusseldorf as the girl above, but it's a nice, decent city and the Old Town and the new built media port are worth a visit. They have also some good museums there, especially for modern art (called K20 and 21).

However, a must-visist is of course the cathedral of nearby cologne (there's great nightlife also, especially at zuelpicher straße) and also Bonn (20 mins from cologne) is worth a visit, as is Aachen. Also very nice and located a bit north to Dusseldorf is the city Munster. Very beautiful.

A must if it's good weather is, as said above, a boat trip over the rhine to Koblenz (starting in maybe Bonn or Bingen). Very romantic.

If you visit Wiesbaden, then I'd go first for Frankfurt (about 2 hours by train from Dusseldorf). Wiesbaden is beautiful, but a bit boring maybe.

A trip through mosel valley is also nice - but don't forget to visit the oldest german town Trier then!

I don't know if Munich is worth the time you need to travel there (about half a day).

  2. While in Duesseldorf you definetly have to go to the "Altstadt" if you are looking for some fun and nightlife! There is so much to see just around the Duesseldorf Area. It all depends what you are looking for. You can drive along the River Rhine and visit castles or you just do city tours....

But while in Duesseldorf be sure to enjoy the Altstadt and the Altbier.

Oh, and I forgot to say it's a shopping paradise...the Koenigsallee is fabulous! Duesseldorf is Germany's Paris so to say....

  3. Munich is quite a bit away from Dusseldorf, and with only 7 days, you probably wouldn't want to waste that much time for getting there. You can still check out Cologne and Trier, the latter claiming the title of "oldest city in Germany" and Frankfurt. If you're interested in the history of heavy industry, the Ruhr area offers a lot to see in terms of coal mining and steel production museums.
