1. I faced the same predicament as you, I really did. I was moving up here to Syd to be with my boyfriend who lived here and also to explore Uni options. And I've come to this conclusion:

    1. Many apartments, like mine, have fly screen over all available doors and windows, so nothing gets in. I've not seen a spider in my apartment. I have seen a couple of huntsmans in the stairwell buuut as scary as they can be, a long ranged can usually does the trick.

    Now, a couple of tips.

Golden Orb Spiders are harmless enough buuut do NOT go to Taronga Zoo in the warm weather. Because that place has thousands. I went for my birthday and had to confront my fear as I didn't want my boyfriend to be upset at spending so much on tickets to have me want to leave straight away but, hopefully this won't give you nightmares, but there were web coridoors in the sky between trees and you could see 30-50 odd individual golden orb spiders above you when walking along at any given time. So yeah., avoid the zoo in the hot weather - go in winter if you want to go.

Also, avoid the Blue Mountains. If you want to see spiders. go there in summer. The views are wonderful but I wouldn't do it again.

To answer your question. No a spider phobia shouldn't stop you from moving to Sydney, but get an apartment with fly screens just incase, or get a good surface spray and spray every other month. And don't go too far bush in the hot seasons and you'll do fine! Hope this helps!

  2. Well.. since you will most likely be living in a house or aparment.. and not a tree.. You will hardly see spiders.. Spiders hide away.. You will probably see one or two a month.. But there are daddy long legs in some houses, they're harmless and small.

You will hardly see a dangerous spider. I've been living in Sydney all my life.. SO thats almost 19 years.. I have only seen two dangerous spiders that whole time. I dont remember seeing them other than those two times.

  3. Apart from antarctica & the arctic I'm pretty sure EVERY continent has spiders!

If it's the funnel web your scared of, why it has lots of cousins that a pretty toxic themselves! We call them bird eating spiders, some have funnels in the ground, others, like a particularly poisonous one up north (which is more toxic that the funel web I might add) build funnels in the bark of trees.

Some zoos run programs for people with common phobias, like spiders or snakes. They can help you overcome your fear, you may not like them still, but the fear will not be irrational.

  4. Sydney is Australia's largest and most populous city. I am sure there are lots who have arachnophobia but this definitely isn't a problem for them as venomous spiders are rarely seen in the city. From time to time, you will however, come across daddy long legs and huntsmen which are harmless.

I've lived in Sydney all my life and I've only seen daddy long legs and huntsmen from time to time ONLY.

  5. Hello. I can understand how you feel as i am so scared of spiders that i cannot sleep in my place if it has one. I really freak out as that is my worst fear. If you get the place sprayed every 12 months i am sure that you will not have any of those problems as they are everywhere and i hate to tell you that. I went to Sydney a few times and i found there was less there than where i am at the moment. Hope that helps. Take care ok.
