Sam Querrey will defend his title at the Farmers Classic in Los Angeles – Tennis News
World number 28, Sam Querrey of the United States, will move on to Los Angeles for defending his championship title at the Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz, in the end of July. The competition will be held in at the
Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA from 25th to 31st of July.
The defending champion Querrey will lead the field at the Farmers Classic as the top seed. The American won the competition last year, when he took down the world number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in the final to register
his fourth championship title of the season. Querrey has already won six ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) singles titles in his career and has reached a career best world ranking of 17 at the start of this year. His recent inconsistency with the racquet
pushed him down to number 28 in men’s ratings but the young American is determined to climb back towards the top.
Earlier this month, former world number four, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, had also agreed to take part in the ATP event in Los Angeles. The Argentine competitor had won the Farmers Classic in it 2008 edition and his return
to the competition certainly adds more excitement to the tournament. Del Potro has been in a brilliant form since his comeback from his wrist injury and has already won two ATP championship titles this year, making him a strong contender for the Los Angeles
title as well.
Tournament director, Bob Kramer is very excited with Querrey’s commitment for playing in the Farmers Classic and expressed that the field at Los Angeles has become much stronger with the inclusion of Querrey and Del Potro. The
Argentine, a former world number four, bagged the Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2009, when he defeated the former world number one, Roger Federer.
“To have the champions from our last three years is great for tennis and the Farmers Classic,” said Tournament Director Bob Kramer. “With Sam’s local ties and vocal fan base here, he always brings a lot of energy to the tournament.
Sam and Juan Martin are great champions, and we are eager for them both to return to UCLA.”
The Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz, will benefit the South California Tennis Association (SCTA) again this time, like it always have been doing for the promotion of tennis. Last year, the tournament raised more than
US$500,000 for SCTA and other local charities.
