Katy Freeman and Julia Smit conquer Women’s qualifying rounds - 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge
SBAC-CA’s Katy Freeman and UN-PC’s Julia Smit demonstrated their stupendous swimming skills in the preliminary rounds on the last day of the 2011 Speedo Grand Challenge, held at William Woollett Aquatic Center.
The third day of the championships concluded with the preliminary rounds of the 200m breast-stroke, 100m back-stroke, 200m butterfly and the 100m freestyle in the Women’s corner.
The session initiated with the 200m breast-stroke heats, where 24-year-old Freeman, remained undisputed throughout her wonderful swim and topped the qualification list. Freeman touched the wall first with a timing of 2:31.83 minutes and was almost three
seconds ahead from her closest swimmer, Elizabeth Smith. Smith out-touched her following swimmer, Jasmine Tosky, claiming the second fastest qualification spot in 2:23.62 minutes against Tosky’s 2:34.79 minutes effort.
Next were the Women’s 100m back-stroke preliminary rounds, where UN-PC’s Smit remained inevitably strong for the top qualification spot. Smit touched the wall in 1:02.84 minutes and was 0.97 seconds faster than her closest competitor, Elizabeth Webb. Webb,
who completed her first lap in the third fastest time, elevated her speed in the second lap, producing a time of 1:03.81 minutes for the second spot. They were followed by Smit’s team-member, Madeline Dirado, who finished her swim in the third fastest time
of 1:03.88 minutes.
Moments later, Jasmine Tosky stunned the arena with her irresistible effort of 2:11.53 minutes in the 200m butterfly heats. Tosky, who earned the top qualification spot, was slightly away from her following swimmers, Andrea Taylor of UN-PC and Katerine Savard
of Club de Natation. Taylor appeared as the second fastest swimmer to enter the final, posting a time of 2:12.24 minutes. The 18-year-old Savard followed them on the finishing wall, by touching the wall in a time of 2:13.07 minutes.
The final event of the session was the 100m freestyle, where the 100m back-stroke’s winner once again dominated her swim to earn the top qualification seat, with timing of 55.30 seconds. Smit was comfortably ahead of her following swimmer, UN-CA’s Jessica
Hardy and PASA-PC’s Jasmine Tosky, who transpired as the second and third fastest swimmers, with timings of 56.49 and 56.61 seconds, respectively. Kate Dwelley of UN-PC was only 0.06 seconds away and secured the fourth qualification spot in a time of 56.67
seconds.
The finals of the same events will take place in the second session, where the winners will earn awards and accolades for their commendable swims.
